BMW 5-Series E39 (1996-2003)

BMW's forth generation 5 Series vehicles, known by the chassis designation E39, were sold between 1995 to 2003. Although the E39 was replaced by BMW E60 in 2003, the E39 Touring models continued production through the end of 2003. With an increased wheelbase over the BMW E34 (the E39's successor), and body rigidity increases, suspension was able to operate more precisely and improve ride quality. Changes to the front suspension to include aluminum components helped offset the increased chassis weight. Additional options first-introduced in the E39 were: A four-cylinder diesel engine plus rack and pinon steering. All-wheel drive options, however, were removed. Models under the E39 line include: 520i (1995-2003), 523i (1995-2000), 525i (2000-2003), 528i (1995-2001), 530i (2000-2003), 535i (1996-2003), 540i (1995-2003), and the M5 (1998-2003).
